Paint a Mural - Graffiti Workshop with Joe Clarke

A unique chance to paint some awesome street art and learn serious graffiti skills from super-cool street artist Joe Clarke!

Join us as we spend a Saturday being let loose with spray paint and rollers on a massive outdoor wall in Hackney! We will be taking over Hackney Down Studios for the day as Joe Clarke, a renowned graffiti artist from London teaches us the tricks of his trade! Participants will be able to experiment with a mixture of spray and liquid paints, testing out Joe's techniques and getting creative with your own! We will have two sessions on the same day, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2.30pm - 4.30pm, resulting in the creation of a full scale mural by the end of the day. Under 14's to be accompanied by an adult. All ages and levels welcome. All materials included, including protective clothing.

Spring Wild Food Foraging with James Wood

Join us as we embark on an adventure across Hackney to discover the wild, edible delicacies to be found growing on your doorstep. During the session we will learn how to safely identify a wide range of plants and try up to 30 pre-made tasters from syrup infusions to chutney and jams. Following the foraging adventure, we will then harvest enough wild plants to cook up our own two-course wild food feast!

James Wood is an artist and wild food forager, author of books 'The Foragers' Cookbook' and  'The Foraged Book Project' and featured on BBC's Countryfile. With his company Totally Wild UK, James has led workshops and participatory events for the last 5 years, aiming to give people the confidence to go out and pick wild edibles in the future, as well as giving a fun and memorable day.

Suitable for all ages and all levels.

Departure point - Pavilion cafe, Corner Old Ford Road, Victoria Park, London, E9 7DE. There are public toilets and drinks available to buy at the departure point. Please arrive in time to set off at 11am. We will depart from the benches outside the cafe.

Learn the Ancient Art of Batik (Wax Painting) at the Geffrye Museum

Come and learn the fascinating art of batik - an ancient textile technique where hot wax is applied to fabric using a tool called a tjanting - with artist Rhian Sutcliffe.

Fabric (usually cotton or silk) is stretched onto a wooden frame and the tjanting is dipped into a pot of melted wax and used as a drawing tool to create patterns, compositions and illustrations. Coloured dyes are then painted onto the fabric, the lines of wax resist the colour, creating striking designs. Rhian will also guide you through other more contemporary techniques such as incising and stamping. All materials included. 
Suitable for all ages, under 14's to be accompanied by an adult.

Stargazing and Lunar Photography from East London’s best rooftop bar! Join us at Netil360 for an unmissable evening exploring the skies! Brought to you by Hackney Arts and the Lumen collective, this unique event will help you to stare at the stars in a whole new light.
Astronomer Paul Hill will take you on a skywards guided tour, talking lunar science and helping you to view the stars and the Moon through a collection of telescopes. With help from the super-talented Lumen collective, East London’s art collective dedicated to astronomy and light, you will be guided in taking a unique photograph of the Moon for you to keep.


With the expert guidance of our hosts, you will be able to print your very own photograph using Impossible Project film. The Impossible Project are the only company still making analog, instant-print film since the demise of Polaroid in 2008, allowing you to make a real-life, stick-it-on-the-wall memory of this unmissable and unique event. When the last Polaroid factory closed down, Impossible stepped in to rescue their machines. They're the only people in the world making instant film for classic Polaroid cameras and we are delighted to bring them to this event to help us print the moon!

Get creative with us and spend your weekend getting loose with spray paint and rollers on a massive outdoor wall in Hackney! Participants will be able learn and experiment painting techniques using a mixture of spray and liquid paints, testing out Joes techniques and getting creative with your own! The workshop will take the form of a paint by numbers theme and is suitable for people of any age and any level of artistic ability. We will have two sessions on the same day, a morning and an afternoon session resulting in the creation of a full scale mural by the end of the day.


Joe Clarke is a 22 year old artist from London. His body of work spans from graffiti to fashion design to 3D installation. Soft colour palettes, effects and multi medium techniques combine to create a strong impact on the viewer. He has curated and exhibited across the UK, designed for major sports brands and painted walls around Europe. His pursuit of unique aesthetics is evolutional and a reflection of the modern times of technology and design.

Past Event: Learn to Draw with Plastic & Make Your Own 3D Printed Phonecase!

We learned to draw WITH PLASTIC in this two-hour workshop with super-talented multi-media artist and designer Grace Du Prez!

The group learned the basics of the amazing 3Doodler pen that literally lets you draw your own freehand creation in multicoloured plastic. And then under Grace's expert guidance, they learned to make their very own phone case to take home or give as a gift. We spent a Saturday afternoon with a difference trying something new, being creative and having fun!

Grace gave all the best tips to ensure everyone made their own unique masterpieces. This class took place in the fantastic Surface Matter studios, the experts in unique creative materials in architecture and design.

Past Event: Turning Points: Your Story, Your Voice - Theatre Making with Yolanda Mercy

We joined actor and playwright Yolanda Mercy for a theatre making workshop exploring past events that inspired a whole generation of poets, writers, storytellers and actors.

What are the events shaping creatives today? How will the creative world respond to #BlackLivesMatter or #Brexit? Are we at a turning point in history? What happens next? Taking inspiration from Hackney Museum’s new exhibition People Power: Black British Art and Activism in Hackney,  the group explored and developed ideas and learned practical tips about how to turn their ideas into a fully funded show. 

Yolanda Mercy is a critically acclaimed actor and playwright who is currently touring nationally her 4* show On The Edge of MeHackney Museum is a community history museum in the heart of Hackney that explores the history of migration to the Borough over 1500 years.

We tried our hand at painting a large scale, outdoor mural with renowned graffiti artist Joe Clarke!

The workshop offered an opportunity to collaborate with Joe Clarke, a graffiti artist from London to produce a large scale mural at Hackney Downs Studios. Participants learned and experimented with painting techniques using a mixture of spray and liquid paints whilst interacting with the artist. We had two sessions on the same day, a morning and an afternoon session resulting in the creation of a full scale mural by the end of the day.

Past Event: Herbal Skincare and Tea-Making Workshop

We gained hands on experience making our own healthy, inexpensive, and effective herbal body balm, using fresh herbs from the Phytology medicine garden. 

Taught by Molly Maitland, we explored the properties of different carrier oils, learned the different techniques of infusing herbs into oils, and made an all-natural body balm to take away with us on the day. 

Phytology is an artist and community led project exploring the use, value, resilience, and function of wildness within urban ecosystems, launching at Bethnal Green Nature Reserve in 2014.

Past Event: Make Your Own 3D-Printed Sunglasses with Grace Du Prez

The group came to try out the 3Doodler with designer Grace Du Prez, a 3D Printing pen that lets you draw with plastic!

This workshop combined the innovation of new technology with the love of something handmade. We learned the basic techniques of the pen and got some expert hints and tricks from the master Grace du Prez. The group learned how to follow templates and construct them into 3D masterpieces, ending in their own pair of self-made sunset shades!

Past Event: Build A Theatre Play In A Day with Russell Lucas

We joined acclaimed theatre director Russell Lucas in this immersive and original workshop!

This super-fast and exciting workshop aimed to produce a brand new play in one day. Director Russell Lucas (Julie Madly Deeply & Driving Miss Daisy) took the group through the fascinating techniques of making a piece of theatre culminating in a directed presentation of the group's findings - in just seven hours!

Through improvisation, research and theatre-making activities, this ensemble group developed three short plays that were presented to family and friends at the end of the day in the incredible setting of east London theatre Hoxton Hall.

We joined Mini Magpie's Creative Director Kimberley Golding to make fun and sustainable upcycled clothing. The class learned how to make baby or children's trousers from an old sweater!

Kimberley Golding took us on a creative journey, teaching the group to make their own sustainable, upcycled fashion for children. Mini Magpie is all about taking old things and making them new and beautiful again; using wool and cashmere to make cosy, comfy, fun and bright outfits for babies and kids.
