Past Event: Learn the Ancient Art of Batik (Wax Painting) at the Geffrye Museum

  • Geffrye Museum 136 Kingsland Road London, England, E2 8EA United Kingdom

We learned the fascinating art of batik - an ancient textile technique where hot wax is applied to fabric using a tool called a tjanting - with artist Rhian Sutcliffe.

We stretched fabric onto a wooden frame and used the tjanting, dipping it into a pot of melted wax and using it as a drawing tool to create patterns, compositions and illustrations. Coloured dyes were then painted onto the fabric, the lines of wax resisted the colour, creating striking designs. Rhian also guided us through other more contemporary techniques such as incising and stamping.
